4 years of Daisy Midgeley: Why Her Trauma Needs To Be Addressed.

This week marked four years since Charlie Jordan came onto our screens as Jenny’s devious stepdaughter, Daisy Midgeley, and she’s been through a lot since her arrival.

We’ve learnt about her tragic past; her estranged mother, her little brother dying at the age of four and the subsequent bullying from her friends, her father cutting her out of his life because of the bad memories…

Despite the barmaid’s bolshy personality, she had a rough start before moving to the cobbles, and it hasn’t all been plain sailing over the last four years either.

While many of her original storylines set her up to be a villain (which was the initial plan for her character, with Charlie telling the Mirror: ‘she’s somebody who will do whatever needs to be done to protect herself. That makes her quite dangerous, so I actually think potentially she could be as bad as Tracy Barlow’), the character grew and developed a lot over the years — much of this down to her relationship with Daniel Osbourne.

The ex-lovers balanced each other out, with Daisy mellowing Daniel somewhat, and Daniel bringing out a softer side to her. Her focus became growing her social media accounts, rather than causing trouble in other peoples’ lives.

The first major obstacle came in the form of a lump on her breast — and though, thankfully, she didn’t end up having cancer, the scare did end up being the thing that changed everything.

It was at this appointment she bumped into Justin Rutherford, who would go on to be her stalker, inevitably turning her life upside down.

What started out as incessant comments on her social media accounts swiftly turned into something more sinister. Justin began showing up the pub, and even at her home, believing Daisy was secretly in love with him, and her social media posts were hints about her location so that he'd show up.

His behaviour worsened, with the stalker letting himself into her home, as well as getting her into trouble with the police, and ensuring her wedding plans fell apart. While she was frightened of what might occur on her wedding day, they went ahead with plans — with Justin striking before the ceremony, throwing acid at her.

Although Ryan took the brunt of the attack, Daisy was still there, and wound up scarred on her chest. Worse, however, was the mental scarring. As Charlie told Radio Times at the time: 'you’ll slowly see that she starts to crumble and get smaller and smaller. I don’t think she’ll ever be the same again.'

Will the trauma ever be addressed? (credit: ITV)

While it's been eighteen months since the acid attack, Daisy yet to properly address any of this trauma. In a throw away line to Bethany Platt, she mentioned 'PTSD', but we've yet to see her really discuss what happened with Justin. She's buried it, never seeking out therapy or opening up about her feelings.

Instead, she focused on the trauma Ryan experienced, despite the fact her own spanned months. The focus of the storyline became the trauma bond, with her mental health seldom considered.

The trauma of months of stalking and an acid attack is certainly something that will have left mental scars and destroyed her internally, and while storylines have to move on, it would be nice to finally see her trauma addressed. It was a massive thing that turned her life upside down, and eventually led to her losing everything.

Daisy is a strong, confident character, but the trauma of the last few years destroyed parts of her. It would be brilliant to see this remembered, and to finally see her open up about all that happened in 2023; to deep dive her mental health after such a violent act.

Hopefully, with the promise of an affair with Daniel over the Christmas period, the reunion with the man who was by her side through it all will allow her to finally discuss what happened with Justin, and do some healing.
