Aggie Bailey was last seen on Coronation Street in June 2023 and then just seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth (or at least, off our TV screens).

Earlier this year, it was finally explained that she'd decided to divorce Ed due to his gambling addiction, with this happening outside of Weatherfield as she was looking after a sick aunt in Birmingham.

But, actress Lorna Laidlaw has finally spoken out about her time on the soap after her confusing exit.

What happened to Aggie Bailey on Coronation Street?

Aggie Bailey's last scenes aired in June 2023 as she regretted winning an auction, only bidding to impress an old neighbour who she actually disliked.

Aggie made out that Sally's house was actually her place as she was embarrassed to show Yvette her actual place. She had no idea that Yvette had actually also liked about being well off.

Randomly, Aggie then disappeared without explanation. With months of viewers wondering just where on earth Aggie was, a vague answer was given. She was looking after a sick aunt in Birmingham. It would've been nice for her to at least say goodbye before going...

Earlier this year, Michael informed Aggie via phone call that Ed had gambled away all of their money. One phone call later and a visit to Birmingham from Ed, and their lengthy marriage was over. Aggie wanted a divorce.

We never did know why Lorna Laidlaw suddenly left the soap as Aggie. But, now, she's spoken out about her time on Corrie for the first time since her exit.

Lorna Laidlaw admits discontent over Corrie writers' decisions

Speaking to her good friend and Doctors star Elisabeth Dermot Walsh on her new podcast Chicken Soap for the Soul, Lorna admitted that she wasn't always happy with the decisions writers made on Corrie.

She shared: "‘I think [the producers] wanted [the Baileys] to have Jamaican accents and I questioned that.

"I knew it wasn’t truthful. I said to them, “I would guarantee that all the actors you’ve auditioned don’t speak in a Jamaican accent because they were born here. I don’t understand why you give them a Jamaican accent because it makes you feel like they’ve just come here and it makes them that further apart from being rooted in Manchester or wherever you want them.

"So we had that discussion. There were lots of little discussions. You know, some people had rehearsed in a Jamaican accent and I just said that I think it’s wrong.

"Let them feel like they’ve been born and bred. Let them own this city just like everybody else. But I still got the job. So when we started, I had to do a Manchester accent.

"If you bring grandparents in, that’s a different thing. You know, it’s a different thing. But this generation, my generation, this age group was born and bred."

Lorna and the soap writers also clashed on the lack of on screen kissing between Aggie and Ed.

The actress explained: "‘Black love is a really big thing at the moment, and it is making sure that you see Black characters kissing, actually kissing. Those Black characters did not kiss.

"It’s that you don’t think about it, and I’m going, “We need to see it, and it needs to be rooted in these soaps, that actually, these families are loving and they kiss and snog each other, just like all the other families” and none of the writers wrote that."
