In recent years, Coronation Street has handled its fair share of issue based storyline. These have ranged from an acid attack, to bullying, to illnesses such as MND, and are often hard hitting and intense.
Corrie works closely with charities and experts to put out these storylines, and never shies away from handling sensitive topics with care.
In tonight’s visit to the cobbles, we saw teenager Mason Radcliffe plan to turn his life around, deciding to go ahead and accept Stu’s job offer in Germany.
While Mason was originally introduced as an antagonist, bullying school peer Liam Connor, it came to light over time that he was being abused by his brothers, and had quickly learnt to take it out on others.
Across his 18 month stint on the soap, the troubled teen formed a bond with Stu, as the formerly homeless and wrongly imprisoned man saw a lot of himself in the youngster. In recent weeks, he also grew close to Sally and Tim Metcalfe, who welcomed him into their home.
While he’s also gotten close to Betsy Swain, the pair had fallen out, when she discovered that Mason was considering the move to Germany, not telling her about it before they slept together.
While it seemed like the youngsters had made up in tonight’s episode, unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
Though it initially seemed like Mason’s brothers beat him up, and he went about his day, tragically a later twist showed that all of those experiences had been nothing but his imagination. Mason was stabbed by a zombie knife, and never made it any further than the precinct.
While Abi stayed with him and called for help, a hoax call tragically delayed the ambulance.
Though he was still alive when the paramedics got to him, he tragically died in the hospital.
It was a poignant episode, highlighting the horrific rise in knife crime across the UK. While we saw Mason start to turn his life around, it’s a stark reminder that carrying a knife can have horrific consequences.
Luca Toolan has proven to be a real talent, and his final episode did not disappoint. It was a strong start to Corrie 2025, and the aftermath is bound to feed into plenty of exciting storylines for weeks to come.
