2024 has been a busy time on Coronation Street with plenty of arrivals and departures in the past year. Some of the characters have provided us with brilliant stories and character development, while others may have potential, but I’m hoping to see more of in the next year…
Coronation Street 2024 arrival: Kit Green
Love him or loathe him, Kit has certainly made his mark on the street. Entering the world of Corrie back in May as Bernie’s long-lost son, he instantly showed he was not to be messed with as he turned Bernie’s life upside down. As a prime player in the police era that is currently taking place in Corrie, he has certainly integrated his place on the Street and is happy to scrap the rule book depending on his own feelings, such as helping Sarah with the evidence, assisting Daisy cover up Daniel’s crash and covering up his own crimes and mishaps.
While Kit may be the brother of Gemma and Paul (RIP), he offers a very different type of character to his siblings. I think it’s what I most like about Kit - he’s full of layers with a clear backstory. There is obviously a lot of bitterness there regarding how he was adopted by Bernie and also stood up a few years ago which reflects in his personality and how he treats people. He’s not instantly likeable with viewers, but I don’t think he needs to be. He offers intrigue, mystery and bundles of personality. He’s charmed Daisy and Shona, and I like that he has weaved himself as part of the community. I’m looking forward to what’s next for the character and well done to Jacob Roberts.
Rowan Cunliffe
The storyline may have created mixed feelings among viewers, but I feel Rowan was a real asset to the show for 2024. Back in March, Leanne was introduced to the 'cult' leader Rowan and instantly got sucked into all things Institute. I really enjoyed the storyline purely as it let Leanne shine. We hadn’t really seen Leanne, Nick or Toyah must in 2023 and this put them right at the front of the show. From AI Oliver to uploads, Rowan brainwashed Leanne completely, ultimately causing distance between her and Toyah and Nick, who then found love with each other.
Emrhys Cooper provided us with a cult leader who had oodles of charm and drama, amazing hair and manipulation galore. I think he played the part perfectly and the Institute highlighted how people get sucked into these scams and how it plays on people’s vulnerability. While we saw him recently on trial which I presume is the end of his character, his scenes with Leanne when it all came out were well done and I enjoyed seeing his real side.
Coronation Street 2024 arrival: Dorin Pop
I know Dorin was only briefly on the cobbles back in 2024, but I thought it was a great idea to bring back Alina and her baby. Corrie fans have been waiting eagerly to see when she would return with only us knowing she was pregnant when she left in 2021. Dorin was instantly a hit with viewers with his cuteness, his funny moments and his excited nature. From blurting out words during scenes, to his comments to Daddy Tyrone, he worked great and was a sweet child character addition.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there are any current plans to bring him back, but hopefully he may come back to the Street in years to come. It worked well introducing a little boy for Tyrone and a new brother for Hope and Ruby.
And those with potential but need time and work...
Bobby Crawford
Just after Peter left, Carla had barely much time to miss him before Bobby arrived at the very end of 2023. Jack Carroll had famously been on BGT back in 2022, so I knew he would offer comedy. While it was a great idea to extend Carla’s family with her nephew, Bobby hasn’t worked as a character as of yet.
We haven’t seen that much of him, particularly with his Auntie Carla, and has really only built bonds with Lauren and Max. But he is often sidelined there with the two taking centre stage with Bobby making the odd appearance. He has tons of potential - he is the son of the banged-up Rob Donovan who famously murdered Tina McIntyre. As the nephew of Carla, he has tons of staying power so I hope they give him more character developments, more friendships with other characters and even a greater insight into his backstory.
Betsy Swain
Having Lisa now in the forefront of the show as a regular character (which has been fantastic), it was exciting to expand her family with the arrival of her daughter Betsy. I was intrigued when we discovered she knew Sabrina and also her blackmail of Joel. But since then the character hasn’t really grown and hasn’t come across likeable. We haven’t had much of the character with her mum, aside from when she’s done something wrong and needs help.
I don’t think pairing her with Mason has helped either. For 2025, I would like to see her mix with more of the younger characters around her age group, without getting into tons of trouble. I think that’s the issue that there is a lot of drama in her short amount of time on the Street. Perhaps she could get a part-time job on the Street away from the factory? With Carla and Lisa now getting into a relationship, it would be interesting to see more of the dynamic of them as a family.
Which new arrival was your favourite?
