Opinion: 'Mad Maya': It's about time she returned to Coronation Street

Maya Sharma aka 'Mad Maya' was a Coronation Street villain who made Dev's life a living hell. But, we want her back on the Street.

Dev's currently living a rather drama-free life with Bernie Winter as of late but there once was a time when he lived in fear. Now, as much as we love Dev, he's become a bit of a wasted character at the moment, acting as the comedic salesman without much excitement in his life. It's been a while since Dev was actually at the centre of a storyline - so we say it's about time his ex Maya made a reappearance to keep him on his toes.

Who was Maya Sharma on Coronation Street?

Maya Sharma was only on the Street for around a year but oh did she make a HUGE impact during her short stay in Weatherfield.

Entering the soap in 2003 as a solicitor, Maya soon met Dev and fell head over heels for him.

Dev and Maya then started to date each other but Maya was clearly more devoted than Dev was. Maya was heartbroken as her partner ended things and got back with Sunita.

He crushed Maya's dreams of marrying her dream man and decided to get wed to Sunita instead... And, you see, Maya wasn't simply going to sit back and watch this happen.

Dev's nightmare

Maya was desperate to ruin Dev and Sunita's relationship and ended up getting them arrested for illegal immigration and bigamy. Poor Dev and Sunita were arrested on their wedding day.

This failed to have a huge impact though, so Maya stepped up her game and set fire to not one, not two... but SEVEN of Dev's shops. That was rather bad for business.

Things came to a head when Maya held the couple hostage in the Corner Shop flat. She tied Dev up, with Sunita being tied to a gas cooker. Maya left them to perish whilst setting the downstairs shop alight.

The shop then exploded but Dev and Sunita had a lucky escape thanks to heroes Ciaran McCarthy and Charlie Stubbs who ran into the burning building and saved them.

Watching the scene unfold whilst sitting in the car, Maya was livid and tried to charge her car at them. She missed and ended up crashing into the viaduct.

Karma came back to bite as when Maya reversed her car for attempt two, a lorry smashed into the back of her.

She survived the ordeal but was unable to escape the police. In 2004, Maya went to prison... and that was that.

Corrie needs a female villain - let's bring Maya back

Recent years of Coronation Street have seen male villains roam the Street, creating lots of excitement and drama.

Stephen Reid's killer reign was a real highlight of 2023, whilst Joel Deering's current whodunnit is currently getting viewers hooked.

With success of female villains on rival soaps in recent years, such as Emmerdale's Meena Jutla, we're desperate for Corrie to introduce a female villain - or bring one back!

Maya Sharma definitely created a buzz in Weatherfield and would most likely be out of prison by now. And, we'd love to see Dev have a proper, meaty storyline once again as that's when he shines best.

Throwing Maya back into Dev's life would be absolute chaos, but we'd love to see how much or how little she's changed twenty years later! Corrie, it's time to bring back Maya.
